He used to be that you couldn’t buy a previous generation OnePlus phone. The company produced a new Android phone (or two) a year and quickly ditched the old model. But a few years ago, this practice stopped. Instead, we saw significant discounts on predecessors as successors arrived. It enabled killer price drops like this Amazon Prime Day deal: A little over a year since its launch, the OnePlus 8 is barely $ 349.
The OnePlus 8 (8/10, WIRED recommends) launched at $ 699, but the company has been selling it for between $ 449 and $ 599 for quite some time. An additional $ 100 to $ 150 discount makes it one of the cheapest powerful android phones about. Seriously, it’s powered by 2020’s flagship Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 865, which is found in phones like Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Sony Xperia 1 II.
It is the same price as our current favorite android phone, the Google Pixel 4A, but you get much faster performance, a 90Hz screen refresh rate, multiple rear cameras, and fast, fast charging. It cannot match the OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro, but it’s still fantastic value.

WIRED: Excellent 6.6-inch AMOLED display with 90Hz screen refresh rate delivers a smooth and vibrant viewing experience whether you’re browsing Twitter or catching up Loki. You’ll never be dissatisfied with the performance of this phone, and it can recharge (with the included cable and adapter) from zero to 100% in just under an hour. There is also 5G connectivity.
TIRED: The camera system features a 48-megapixel main sensor, 16-megapixel ultra-wide, and 2-megapixel macro, and they won’t knock you over. (You can probably take slightly nicer photos with the $ 350 Google Pixel 4A.) The battery life is also okay. It’s probably okay fair make you spend a day. There’s no headphone jack, no wireless charging, and no MicroSD card slot. It will only get one more upgrade to the Android operating system (Android 12) and just under two years of security updates.
