California DMV Has Tesla ‘Under Review’ Over Musk’s FSD Claims

According to LA Times, The California Department of Motor Vehicles appears to be actively investigating Tesla over CEO Elon Musk’s bold claims regarding his company’s full autonomous driving technology. The news barely comes one week after Tesla engineers private admission to DMV that Musk had exaggerated the capabilities of the FSD system on social media.

The FSD is a $ 10,000 option for Tesla models and promises to do everything from lane changing in freeway traffic and taking the exits alone at the independent stop to lights and traffic signs. However, this does not make them “fully” autonomous. Tesla vehicles are currently operating with Level 2 range, autopilot software director CJ Moore told DMV investigators on a March 9 teleconference.

“The driver interaction ratio should be on the order of 1 or 2 million miles per driver interaction to move to higher levels of automation,” notes a memo obtained by Plainsite obtained regarding the meeting reads. “Tesla indicated that Elon extrapolated the improvement rates by talking about L5 capabilities. Tesla could not say if the improvement rate would reach L5 by the end of the calendar year.”

This fact, which Tesla himself admits on its website “does not make the car self-sufficient” (albeit in a tiny font), has not prevented a number of rich knuckleheads to treat these cars like their personal robo-heaters – with years of deadly results.

While California law blames any accident or damage caused by doing this outright to those technically behind the wheel, the DMV has the power to penalize any auto company that misleads its customers under the guise. Lanham LawBryant Walker Smith, associate professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law, told the Time.

These sanctions could include the suspension (or outright revocation) of Tesla’s autonomous vehicle deployment licenses, as well as the company’s manufacturing and dealer licenses. For drivers, such a revocation would mean their vehicles could be “taken off the road by a police officer,” a spokesperson for the DMV told the Time, if the cop notices that they have FSD activated.

This is just the latest in Tesla’s long-standing litigation over its autonomous driving systems. The company is currently facing hundreds of lawsuits, nearly two dozen NHTSA investigations, and the FTC is investigating deceptive marketing claims against it. same CCP has been plunging relentlessly into Tesla for weeks on recent accidents.
