The world of artificial intelligence is exploding and one of the first publicly accessible AI tools, ChatGPT, is open to the public. Data Doctors’ Ken Colburn offers tips to get you started.
Q: I keep hearing about how great ChatGPT is, but what can it do for non-techies?
answer: The world of artificial intelligence is exploding and one of the first publicly accessible AI tools, ChatGPT, is open to the public.
getting started
When you first sign up for a free account, you’ll be taken to the ChatGPT start page where you’ll see some examples of what you can ask.
In the community, your question is called a “prompt”. This is important to remember because of the research tips we provide later.
learn complex concepts
Like a search engine, ChatGPT can be used to learn, but it’s more like having a conversation, so you don’t have to comb through a bunch of websites.
For example, you can ask, “Tell me about black holes like a 10-year-old,” and if the explanation doesn’t help, you can click the button at the bottom that says “Regenerate response.” for another.
You can ask follow-up questions to keep the “conversation” going if you’d like to further clarify certain parts of your explanation.
This is one of the features that makes ChatGPT so powerful because conversations are saved as threads so you can come back and continue later and it remembers everything you asked previously.

meal planning
An example often used to demonstrate the usefulness of ChatGPT is creating meal plans based on personal preferences, dietary restrictions, or ingredients on hand.
For example, you can prompt, “Give me 10 meal ideas with chicken, zucchini, and rice.”
If the 5th suggestion is something you want to prepare, continue typing ‘Give me a detailed recipe for the 5th’ and you’ll get a list of ingredients and how to make it.
If you have any dietary restrictions, you can include them in the initial prompt and keep the suggested diet free of things like nuts and dairy.
Create table
A common task when doing research on the Internet is gathering information about various products that you may be interested in purchasing.
For example, let’s say you bought a used compact SUV and want to compare the top models based on certain parameters.
Prompt ‘Make a table of the best used compact SUVs, including average price, fuel economy rating, crash test rating, number of passengers, dimensions and cargo space’ and it will immediately tabulate and compare everything can.
rapid investigation
The possible uses are only limited by your imagination, so it’s helpful to know how others are using it.
An easy way to learn new prompts is to search the internet or social media for your particular interest (e.g. AI prompts for marketing).
Limitations
It is important to understand that ChatGPT does not have direct access to the internet and the information fed to ChatGPT was cut off in 2021, so we are unaware of any events or information generated since then.
Also, do not make any important decisions without fact-checking the information provided, as it may not always be accurate.
