DoorDash jobs reveal German launch plan

The DoorDash food delivery app is gearing up for launch in Germany, as part of what will be the US market leader’s first foray into the European delivery app market.

The company shared 15 jobs Monday looking for management, strategy and recruiting positions in Berlin. It is not yet known when he plans to launch.

The move will follow Uber, which in April, told the Financial Times that she would bring her Uber Eats food service to Germany in “a few weeks” from Berlin.

Earlier this month, Delivery Hero, which sold its German business to Just Eat Takeaway in 2018, said it would. return to the country under its Foodpanda brand. The Finnish Wolt has also entered the market recently.

The new players threaten to disrupt the historic dominance of Just Eat Takeaway, which had the German market almost to its own for the past two years.

“Competition makes us stronger,” said Jitse Groen, CEO of Just Eat Takeaway, in a tweet last week reacting to the news of Delivery Hero’s return.

DoorDash declined to comment on job postings or the company’s expansion plans in Germany. “We are continually evaluating expansion opportunities as we aim to strengthen our international presence,” he said.

DoorDash is expected to mount a wider push in Europe, including the UK. The FT has Previously reported the company was seeking acquisition targets in Europe, while the job posting for the German managing director called for someone who could “develop a playbook” for “faster” entry into other markets.

It’s unclear which employment model DoorDash would seek to use in Germany, where stricter labor laws mean that the setup of construction workers it uses in the United States would not be allowed.

One of the advertised positions, for a head of policy and government relations, calls for someone familiar with “the political and regulatory environment in Germany and at EU level”.

Last month, Uber told the FT that its food couriers in Berlin would be employed by fleet management companies, similar to minicab groups, which are under contract with Uber and are paid per order. It is then up to fleet managers to decide how to retain and compensate workers.

DoorDash is the largest food delivery app market in the United States, with around 55% of the market nationwide, according to Edison Trends data based on sales for the last week of April. Uber Eats has 31 percent, while Grubhub, soon to be possessed by Just Eat Takeaway, pending shareholder approval, at 13 percent.

DoorDash is increasingly supplying other types of goods as well. Last week, he said about 7% of his total orders are now for everyday items such as toiletries, flowers or alcohol. In addition to picking up from existing stores, such as 7-Eleven, it also operates a network of over 25 “Dashmarts”, warehouses where couriers can pick up items for prompt delivery.

If it seeks to emulate this model in the German market, it will compete with Gorillas and Flink, two Berlin-based fast delivery apps. Istanbul’s Getir, a similar app, plans to launch in Berlin soon.
