To figure out what’s going on, I spoke with (parent company of Engadget) Verizon Media Studios’ own senior director of streaming technology, Dennis Scarna. We did finally get some responses at the time of the enhancement, which seems to indicate that the ESA was made aware of the problem and may have worked on a fix. The AI-generated captions are unlikely to have helped. Although technology is improving, they are still imperfect and many broadcasters prefer to rely on human stenographers.
