Gaza: Islamic Jihad commander killed in Israeli airstrike | Gaza News

An armed group said Hussam Abu Harbeed, one of its leaders in Gaza, was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

An Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed Hussam Abu Harbeed, an Islamic Jihad leader, the armed group said.

The murder on Monday was likely to spark a fierce backlash from the group fighting alongside Hamas, the movement that rules the Gaza Strip.

The IDF said in a statement that Harbeed was “behind several terrorist anti-tank missile attacks against Israeli civilians.”

Shortly after Harbeed’s murder, Islamic Jihad said it fired rockets at the Israeli coastal town of Ashdod.

At least three Palestinians were also killed by an Israeli airstrike on a car in Gaza City on Monday, medics said after a night of Israeli airstrikes.

The IDF said Gaza fighters fired around 60 rockets at Israeli towns overnight, up from 120 and 200 the two nights before.

Hamas said its attacks were in retaliation for “Israel’s continued aggression against civilians” and called the civilian victims “premeditated killings.”

At least 200 Palestinians, including 58 children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the latest violence began a week ago.

More than 1,300 Palestinians were also injured.
