Google Meet group video chats had a layout of tiles on large screens since the start of the pandemic, but you’ve had to endure a much less practical (and less egalitarian) view if you wanted to participate on your phone. No more – Google is deployment grid view for mobile users on iOS, with Android “Coming soon.” Instead of focusing primarily on one caller at a time, Meet now gives multiple participants equal treatment.
It’s a relatively straightforward decision, but it’s also an important recognition that video chats have changed due to social distancing and the shift to work from home. You’re less likely to watch a presentation in a conference room and more likely to have conversations with coworkers, family, and friends. And with many companies make remote work a permanent option, changes to Google Meet could come in handy long after it’s safe to see others in person.
