Square Enix has spent an enormous amount of time and money to make Marvel Avengers, and nine months later, its play as a AAA service still doesn’t seem to be paying off. Avengers was just the start, though: it’s a “multi-year, multi-game” deal, and the upcoming SE-Marvel title, guardians of the galaxy, has just been announced for an October 26 release. This time, Eidos-Montreal takes the reins and leads the partnership in a whole new direction. Ahead of the game’s unveiling at E3 today, Eidos gave reporters an in-depth look at Guardians, and detailed his goals for the game.
Initially, it is a storytelling, single-player action-adventure game. Given Eidos-Montreal’s pedigree – this is the studio responsible for “modern” Deus Ex games, including Human revolution and Humanity Divided – that probably shouldn’t come as a surprise.
It was not taken for granted, however: Crystal Dynamics was known for rebooted Tomb Raider games before embarking on microtransaction with Avengers. Speaking of which, Mary Demarle, Senior Narrative Director at Eidos-Montreal, said it was important for players to have all the game on day one, and made it clear that “there will be no downloadable content. for this game, and there is none. In guardians of the galaxy, you will play as Star-Lord and Star-Lord only. “It quickly became clear that you have to play Star-Lord because [he’s] the heart of this team, he is the human part of this team, with whom we can identify, ”said Demarle.
The action is played in third person, with an over the shoulder perspective. In battle, the other Guardians will fight for themselves, but as the leader, you will be able to command them how best to approach a fight and unleash their unique abilities. This happens on the fly, with time slowing down as you navigate these combat menus using the face buttons on your controller. Although I only saw a few fights, the enemies seem to be the sponge ball type – so Guardians shares at least one trait with Avengers.
Aside from the action, the “adventure” part of the game also relies on the Guardians’ unique team dynamics. In one segment, Star-Lord had to find the best way to cross a ravine. He chose to have Drax throw Rocket to activate a bridge on the other side. After that happened, the game threw a TellTale-like notification “Rocket is furious that you let Drax throw him” at the top left of the screen.
These decisions, associated with a lot Mass Effect-style (or Deus Ex-style, if we’re fairer) choices during conversations and cutscenes, presents a deeper relationship system where you’ll need to balance your team’s needs throughout the game. going to be at the heart of all the social interactions that they have… you have to cheer them up through some of the mechanisms that we have when things aren’t going so well, ”Demarle said. At this point, it’s probably time to talk about the “it’s not Chris Pratt” elephant in the room. Like at Square Enix Avengers, character designs and voices are not Hollywood incarnations. Instead, Rocket, Gamora and co. Draw out elements of their likenesses both in the comics and in the MCU.
Despite knowing all the characters before they appeared on screen, the MCU is so ubiquitous in our culture that the heroes of Avengers, who were very close to their Hollywood counterparts in everything but the face, made me feel like I was cosplaying as the Avengers, rather than playing them.
In Guardians, this is not a big problem, as the majority of the characters are more identifiable by their species than by their facial features. Drax has a less vascular design, and his character and personality seems to be a bit closer to his roots than the comedic relief he offers in the movies. Gamora’s costume is significantly less Hot Topic than in the MCU, although she retains her black-red ombre hair. Plus, Rocket now has a Viking goat beard? There’s still an element of cosplay here – Star-Lord’s appearance is very similar to the movies, and all of the Guardians’ voices will take some getting used to – but the effect is overall less shocking than it does. was not in Avengers.
A domain the game is relying heavily on the MCU for music. He’s played a huge role in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies so far, although that’s not really a thing in the comics. The presentation featured two 80s classics in “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Bad Reputation”. That last song was triggered in the middle of the game when Star-Lord launched a “caucus” that resulted in the entire crew unleashing a flurry of attacks on an enemy to Joan Jett’s backing vocals. “Licensed music isn’t just a passive thing in our game,” Demarle said. “He actually has an essential role in certain actions. In case it’s not already obvious, we were extremely impressed with the presentation of Square Enix. This is obviously the start, but the tone and voiceover captures the spirit of the Guardians well. Combat looks a lot like any modern third-person action game, but at least Eidos tries to spice things up a bit with team controls, choices, and puzzle solving. Sometimes it felt like they were addressing the reaction directly to Marvel Avengers. Hopefully we’ll see a lot more of the game before its release.
