Wear Wild Boar 104 in an area of Shibuya where it’s more popular and you’ll see a significant stat buff when fighting the noise. Sometimes Neku isn’t cool enough to wear something from Tiger Punks yet. However, the pins that Neku and the rest of the players use to harness the power of Psych abilities and fight noise are associated with these clothing brands. It’s like having a Champion enamel pin that gave you telekinesis, and by wearing one of their sweatshirts you also got super strong.
The more Neku wears certain brands and uses their corresponding pins in combat, the more the visual language of the neighborhood youth changes. More NPCs will wear the mark that Neku wears, and he will find himself a trailblazer. This lends itself to the common definition of street fashion: certain trends and styles dictated not by advertisers but rather by the communities that wear them.
The developers initially planned to use all of Tokyo to create the setting and backdrop for the Reaper’s Game, but ultimately went with Shibuya. However, fashions from all over Tokyo are represented. Each brand in the game serves different sects of Tokyo’s youth culture. Everyone from the gyaru to young professionals to punks can find something to dress up in the Reaper’s Game.
In Shibuya 104, Wild Boar’s hip-hop-inspired camo pants and graphic tees mimic BAPE’s style. D + B 104 satin camisoles and slightly bad girl styles are like Egoist and rienda. In the Cat Street play zone, possibly a play on Harajuku’s Takeshita-dori, Sheep Heavenly delves into the technicolor maximalism of home decor and DIY brands like 6% Doki Doki and Spank !. KuraKura is also part of the decora style. The Molco region has Tiger Punks, which is all made up of tartan and biker jackets like SEX POT ReVeNGE, and Neku looks like he could join the latest visual kei band in the making. The various Mus Rattus dotted all over Shibuya are as if Team Message and WEGO have a child in love.
Neku starts off as cold, distant, and lonely when he first wakes up in the game. His journey – realizing that he doesn’t have to be himself against the world, that he can open up and take care of him. of others, and that he can work with others towards a common goal – works with the philosophy of alternative modes.
Japanese street fashion, the alternative fashions so far from the bland similarity of fast fashion, allows for individual expression. Sometimes it’s not just about loving a brand, it’s about how to take an item of clothing and turn it into something completely unique. It’s about standing out from the pack while finding community in people who express themselves using fashion the way you do.
There will always be brand loyalists. These brands, like the guys and ganguros from Alba Rosa and Senta from Shibuya, have mingled with the identity of a specific subculture. You can get lost in a collective, but these fashion brands remain alternatives and move away from the norm. Community does not necessarily mean collective similarity.
Neku and the rest of the players blend in with the crowd in Shibuya because they live in a parallel dimension and reality cannot see them. But through fashion and influencing the streets around them, they make an impact and are seen. They always come up against the expectations and pressures of society through their fashionable families.
