In-app ads are coming to Oculus Quest

In the coming weeks, Facebook plans to start testing the ads Oculus Quest owners will see while playing games and using apps with their headsets. The first of these will appear in blaston, a first-person hell of Resolution Games, followed by software from two other anonymous developers over the next few weeks.

“At the moment, this is a test with a few applications,” the company said in a blog post spotted by The edge. “Once we see how this test goes and incorporate feedback from developers and the community, we’ll provide more details on when ads can become more widely available on the Oculus platform and in the Oculus platform. Oculus mobile application. “

    Facebook

As you can see from the GIF above, you can hover your controller over an in-game ad to interact with it and save it for later viewing. Meanwhile, tap the three dots icon to display the option to hide an ad. Facebook says the introduction of headset ads “does not change” its current privacy or policy policies. Specifically, the company is doing everything possible to note that it will not use the information stored on your Oculus Quest headset to target specific promotions to you. This includes the data processed by the cameras in your headset and any information you share with Oculus Move, its fitness tracking platform. The company also said it “does not intend” to use motion data to target ads at this time.

Facebook goes on to say that it is introducing in-app ads to explore new ways to help developers generate revenue as it seeks to make virtual reality a “standalone” platform. He also notes that the additional income will help him make more affordable helmets like the $ 299 Oculus Quest 2.

Just like his decision last year to requires a Facebook account to use Oculus hardware, today’s announcement may irritate fans of virtual reality. But in many ways, when it comes to Oculus and the ads, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. Since 2019, Facebook uses the data it collect from Oculus devices to push targeted ads to connected Facebook accounts, and more recently it has started testing ads in the Mobile eye app.
