The Simorgh supercomputer, named after a mythical Persian bird, was developed by Iranian engineers.

Tehran, Iran – Iran has unveiled a supercomputer – its most powerful to date – developed nationally by Tehran’s Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT), according to state-run news site IRNA.

The supercomputer – named Simorgh after a mythical Persian bird – has a performance capacity of 0.56 petaflops at the moment and will reach a petaflops in two months.

The supercomputer was said to have been entirely designed and built by a team of Iranian engineers, who developed the country’s first supercomputer ten years ago, but some of its hardware has been imported.

The supercomputer will offer large-scale data analysis services for a variety of public and private scientific research, according to its developers. Among other things, it will be used to analyze artificial intelligence, analyze traffic and weather data and process images.

Amirkabir President Ahmad Motamedi said that in addition to serving the government, the supercomputer aims to provide reliable infrastructure for businesses focused on private companies.

“For the moment, knowledge-based companies have offered good platforms but they do not have good infrastructure inside the country, which leads them to use infrastructure outside the country”, a- he said at a press conference in the capital Tehran on Sunday.

The supercomputer has 42 racks covering an area of ​​approximately 250 square meters (2,690 square feet) according to the TIA-942 standard and is expected to be upgraded to 84 racks spread over an area of ​​400 square meters (4,305 square feet).

According to IRNA, the infrastructure put in place at TUE Tehran will allow the supercomputer to reach a capacity of 10 petaflops in its next stages of development, which will place it in the ranks of some of the most powerful international peers.

The university worked in cooperation with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which provided half of its 1 trillion rials ($ 4.5 million) budget, and the science division of the the presidential office and the science ministry bore the rest of the costs. .

ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi said work on the next supercomputer has already started and it will have 100 times the capacity of Simorgh.

He said in a tweet that the supercomputer would be called Maryam, named after the late Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, to “thank Iranian girls’ efforts in ICT.”

A professor at Stanford University, Mirzakhani died of breast cancer in 2017 at the age of 40. In 2014, she received the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics, becoming the first woman and the first Iranian to receive it.
