LG Dual Inverter Air Conditioner Review (LW1019IVSM): Fast and Quiet

It’s almost impossible dislike LG’s Dual Inverter window air conditioner (or if you want to call it by its official name, the LW1019IVSM), especially with temperatures exceeding 95 degrees in New York this summer. It cools my room incredibly fast and it doesn’t make too much noise. It’s smart too. Before entering my building, I turn it on remotely so that I can enter directly into a semblance of happiness.

OK fine. I had to go to the hardware store to install it, in part because my windows are weird. But once I rode the heavy thing, it swept my woes away with freezing gusts.

The ice man is coming

It took me two days to install this AC unit. It’s my fault I decided to turn it up at 11 p.m., but it’s do not my fault that I realized soon after that I couldn’t do it without a bit of gear. The specification calls for sash windows of a certain size, which I have. But the center of the threshold is like a deep canyon. It is not aligned with the interior threshold, meaning there was no easy way to mount the included L-brackets to keep it secure.

The fact that the instruction booklet has a solution included suggests that this is not an uncommon problem. So the next morning I scooped up some plywood from a nearby Home Depot, sawed it to the right shape, and laid it down to create an even surface. I screwed the L-brackets onto the plywood and lifted the 63 pound thing into place with the help of my partner.

The rest was relatively easy. The manual is quite detailed and easy to follow; just be prepared for possible window shenanigans. If you are at the local hardware store, you can also get a Metal support rather. Air conditioning will be much safer (this may also be a requirement in cities like New York) and you won’t have to drill any holes.

LG includes a fair amount of foam and padding to seal the spaces around the AC unit, but don’t expect the same level of sound blocking as when your window was closed. Noise will leak (thanks, New York). It doesn’t beat the soundproofing I’ve experienced with Midea U-Shaped Air Conditioner, where the window descends much further, creating a smaller space.

Cool party

What exactly does “Dual Inverter” mean? A regular air conditioner uses a single motor compressor to remove hot air from a room, cool the air in a room, and remove heat outside. Usually, the air conditioner detects when the room is too hot and the compressor rises to the maximum level, then stops when the room reaches the correct temperature.

However, the LG AC has compressors and twin chambers, which allows it to adjust its output. If a room only requires a certain amount of energy to cool a room, the motor does not need to fully engage to operate. This makes the unit faster, quieter and more energy efficient. According to Energy Star, this unit uses 27% less energy than the American federal standard, and that did successfully maintain temperatures after the room has cooled.

What you probably want to know the most is how well it cools down, to save you from the next heatwave. The answer is very, very good. On a particularly sweltering 94 degree day, this LG unit dropped the interior temperature from about 84 degrees to 73 degrees in less than an hour.
