London Underground to provide full mobile coverage by the end of 2024

London is expansion 4G mobile coverage throughout the metro. The network, which will cover all stations and tunnels in the UK capital’s busy metro, will be delivered by the end of 2024. Before that, some of the busiest sections of the metro will benefit from 4G connectivity from by the end of 2022, notably Oxford. Circus, Tottenham Court Road, Bank, Euston and Camden Town stations.

Transport to London has selected the infrastructure provider BAI Communications to build the network under a 20-year concession. The tube tunnels will also be fitted with ultra-fast fiber optic cables to bring all-fiber broadband to more parts of London. With 5G already germinating in hundreds of cities across the UK, the tube infrastructure is being built to allow a ‘seamless’ upgrade going forward, Transport for London has announced ( TFL).

The final step in TFL’s connectivity rollout is the culmination of a four-year process. A auction was held in 2017 and was followed by a 4G driver on the platforms and in the tunnels of the eastern section of the Jubilee Line in 2020. The test saw the British capital catch up with other major cities that already offered mobile connectivity on their metro systems, including New York, Paris and Berlin. London’s underground network already offers WiFi from operator Virgin Media at more than 260 stations.

TFL said all upgrade work will be done after hours to avoid disturbing commuters. The project will see more than 2,000 kilometers of cables installed in tunnels and stations. Along with the Jubilee line, TFL has also started work on the Victoria line as well as on the extension of the northern line.
