In the United States only, the Department of Agriculture estimates 30 to 40 percent food ends up in landfills. This is both an environmental and an economic problem, with food waste being one of the main causes of greenhouse gas emissions. A startup called No waste believes machine learning may play a role in solving the problem.
The company has developed an AI-powered system to automatically lower the price of perishables as they spend more time on store shelves. The closer a product is to its expiration date, the less it will be to buy. And you’ll see all of that reflected in the price tags that grocery stores have on their shelves. After working on the system since 2016, Wasteless is on the verge of test your software with Metro, a company that operates 678 wholesale grocery stores in 24 countries around the world. The two plan to deploy the technology initially in Metro’s Makro stores in Poland before rolling it out in other markets.
Wasteless claims its system reduces food waste in grocery stores by at least 40%. Over the next few years, the company believes it can increase that number to 80% by improving its technology. As you would expect, with such a widespread and significant problem as food waste, various organizations are trying to do what they can to help. One of the most notable teams working on the issue is Alphabet Delta Project. The moonshot recently began testing a prototype computer vision system for use in commercial kitchens.
