From the start, Universal struggled to establish their Dark universe, consisting of films about Dracula, Wolfman, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein and Jekyll / Hyde. They tried to shake things up in 2014 with Dracula Untold, but it was a financial and critical failure. Unfortunately, the years 2017 The Mummy starring Tom Cruise suffered a similar fate in an attempt to restart things.

With that, the studio’s Dark Universe was DOA. That’s until Leigh Whanelle Invisible Man (2019) exceeded expectations and rekindled confidence in the franchise.

Invisible Man opened the door to new stories, actors, directors and films. The latest movie to find a home at Universal is Renfield. If you know Dracula’s story, the former Renfield was one of Dracula’s familiars. He’s not a central character in the story, so the choice to make a movie about and explore his life before and after Dracula is an interesting one.

Director Chris McKay (The war of tomorrow) is in talks to direct the film with writer Rick and Morty Ryan Ridley. At Kevin smith Fat man beyond podcast, Renfield writer and producer Robert Kirkman discussed what fans can expect from the film. “We’re making this cool movie for Universal that focuses on Renfield,” Kirkman said. “It’s a story about him being Dracula’s henchman and how shitty work it is.” It’s funny, extremely violent the comedy because I have a crutch, and it’s violence.

Digital spy reports that Dark Universe is fast on the move, with several projects already underway.

  • Dracula, directed by Karyn Kusama
  • The invisible woman, directed by Elizabeth Banks
  • Ryan Gosling stars in a new version The werewolf, directed by Leigh Whannell.
  • Paul Feig’s Dark army, which is supposed to feature classic universal monsters

There are even more movies out there, but they’re not in development but don’t have specific details available.

What do you think of the development of a new solid dark universe? Any particular monsters you want to see? Let us know in the comments!
