This is not a traditional WIRED product review. It compares three new artificial intelligence software tools—OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing Chat, and Google’s Bard—that are reshaping how we access information online.
For the past 30 years, we’ve browsed the web or used search engines, put in a little bit of data, and received a mostly static answer in response. As advanced artificial intelligence (and data monetization schemes) have entered the conversation, the input/output relationship has become quite credible. Now, the next wave of generative AI is enabling new paradigms.
But these aren’t really humane conversations. Chatbots do not have human welfare in mind. When we use generative AI tools, we are talking to language learning machines. A language learning machine is created by an even larger metaphorical machine. The responses you get from ChatGPT, Bing Chat, or Google Bard are predictive responses generated from a corpus of data that reflects the language of the internet. These chatbots are powerfully interactive, smart, creative, and sometimes fun. They also attract little liars: the datasets they were trained on are full of bias, and some of the answers they spew are so authoritative, nonsensical, offensive, or just plain wrong. I’m here.

With OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing Chat, or Google Bard, you’re relying on software that uses large, complex language models to predict the next word or series of words the software will spit out. Having invested billions in OpenAI, Microsoft soon followed Bing Chat, which uses ChatGPT technology. And last week, Google started giving access to Google Bard to a limited number of people.
