‘Roblox’ will use content classifications to help limit access to sexual material

The creators of Roblox take extra steps to keep sexual material away from the eyes and ears of young players. Roblox Corporation vice president of trust and security Remy Malan told the the Wall Street newspaper for which the company develops content classifications for Roblox to help parents limit the games children can play on the platform. This would give you more control than the current approach, which forces the company to restrict children to games that it considers age appropriate.

Malan did not say when the rating system could be expected to appear, but added that parental controls will be easier to find and use.

Effort is a recognition that sexual content has a significant presence in Roblox, and that it is potentially more dangerous than seeing a graphic act or hearing racy conversations. While many participants in sex-themed games are simply looking for an outlet, there is a risk of encountering deceptive or otherwise malicious gamers. Ratings can help parents limit access to specific content until their kids are ready.

The effort is also a recognition that parental control are only useful if they are visible and reasonably strong. Adults won’t use tools they don’t know anything about, after all. And this is especially important for Roblox, where more than half of daily users are under the age of 13.
