In an interview with journalist Eric Newcomer, Mostaque said, “I don’t think it’s just an IPO. You need incredible revenue, incredible margins and distribution, and that’s what we’ve been doing… since birth. It’s been 17 months.” He also said that the business model for Stability AI’s open-source platform will be seen more properly in the next year, but he said, “I’ve given up my arbitrage opportunity. I don’t want to,” he added.
This generative intelligence company rose to prominence for building Stable Diffusion, an image generation system, as well as Dance Diffusion and open source music development. So it’s no surprise that Mostaque has a keen interest in creating open source standards in the world of generated art.
Mostaque was one of more than 1,100 prominent signatories this week to publish an open letter calling for greater regulation in the AI space. His name has appeared alongside Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Tristan Harris.

Bloomberg reports that Stability AI is seeking $4 billion in funding and reportedly hit a $1 billion post-investment valuation in October. Partner of Coatue and Lightspeed Venture. Mostaque did not comment on the funding rumors. Earlier this month, Stability AI purchased his Init ML of imaging tools.
Despite all the activity in the space, Mostaque doesn’t think AI is a bubble, saying, “It’s bigger than 5G and self-driving customers.”
“When founders come to me, I say make a good product, solve a problem…most things are still surface level,” he said.
