Taika Waititi jumps in front of the camera for a new role in HBO Max Pirate the comedy, Our flag means death. Written by David Jenkins (People of the earth), Garrett Basch (What we do in the shadows), and Dan Halstead, Waititi will debut alongside Rhys Darby and act as executive producer.

The director will play the most popular hacker in history, Blackbeard. Jenkins said Deadline about his view of Blackbeard as “a lover, a fighter, a tactical genius, a poetic and possibly mad soul”. The show’s writers are clearly interested in showing the softer side of Blackbeard, which is why Jenkins thought Waititi would be perfect for the role: “Only one man could play that role, and that’s the great Taika Waititi. We are delighted beyond measure that he has decided to put on a beard.

The series is based on the misadventures of “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet, who was a wealthy Barbadian aristocrat before turning to a life of piracy. To begin with, Stede buys an expensive boat and names it Revenge, then travels the American East Coast with his paid crew, stealing and plundering other ships.

Waititi quickly became a Hollywood darling. After achieving independent success What we do in the shadows and Wilderpeople Hunt, he was picked up by Marvel to lead Thor: Ragnorok and its sequel, Thor: love and thunder. In 2019 he won an Oscar for Best Suited Screenplay forr Jojo Rabbit. Phew! He is a reserved and busy man.

There is no information available for when Our flag means death is going to go into production, but I’m sure HBO Max will keep fans in the loop once more information is released.
