With the rise of AI language models and tools such as ChatGPT and Bard, we have heard warnings from stakeholders such as Elon Musk about the risks AI poses. Now, a group of prominent industry leaders have said that mitigating the risk of AI-induced extinction should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. issued a one-sentence statement.
It’s… heavy. The document was posted to the Center for AI Safety, an organization with a mission to “reduce societal-scale risks from artificial intelligence,” according to the center’s website. The signatories include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis. Turing Award-winning researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Joshua Bengio, the godfathers of modern AI, are among them. Hinton recently left Google, citing ethical concerns.
This is not the first time such a statement has been made. In March, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and more than 1,000 others called for a six-month pause on AI so that the industry and the public could effectively catch up with the technology. “In recent months, AI labs have been embroiled in an uncontrollable race to develop and deploy ever-more-powerful digital minds that no one (not even their creators) can understand, predict, or reliably control. There are,” the letter said. No specific scenario has been spelled out for how AI threatens humanity, but there is more than enough of his sci-fi work to make you think about the worst case. thank you, matrix.
