Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson dropped a rock on his fans this week by posting a Black adam photo on Instagram to launch production of the long-awaited film.
“History in the making, extremely excited and what a humble moment to share with you,” Johnson wrote. “Our Black Adam’s first day of filming officially kicks off.” Although the official plot of the DC movie is unknown, the cast of characters is thrilling; Aldis Hodge (Invisible Man) is Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) is Dr fate, Noah Centineo (Masters of the Universe) is Atom smasher, Sarah Shahi is Isis, and Quintessa Swindell is Cyclone.
The Rock has been confirmed as Black Adam Seven years ago. Yes, seven years ago. First, the character had to make a series of cameos throughout the DCEU. Then a solo film was announced to be part of the DC Synderverse. Since Synder films did not meet the expectations of the WB, the Black adam the film was in limbo a bit. A series of release dates for the film were reported, then the pandemic struck and the project was put on hold again. io9 did a massive movie timeline breakdown which you can check out here.
Based on the comics written by CC Beck and Otto Binder, DC villain Black Adam – who existed thousands of years before young Billy Batson obtained his powers – originally started out as the archenemy. by Captain Marvel (renamed Shazam) and the entire Marvel family. Making her first single appearance in the 1945 issue of The Marvel family, the character was revived in the 1970s. Recent iterations of the character describe him as less of a stone cold villain and more as a corrupt antihero. I guess that’s the route the film will take.
G / O Media can get a commission
Now that filming has begun, the always gracious actor has excited the film crew, mainly praising director Jaume Collet-Serra (who worked with Johnson on Jungle cruise) and Lawrence Sher (Joker) cinematography in his Instagram post. Rory Haines (Mauritanian), Sohrab Noshirvani (Mauritanian) and Adam Sztykiel (Carnage) wrote the script.
The Rock must be relieved that things are in motion. I have to give the man credit. He really held on for that role – and for good reason because this cast is stacked. Black adam now lands in theaters on July 29, 2022.
