TikTok will make personalized ads mandatory on April 15

TikTok will stop allowing users to avoid personalized ads. As it stands, the app includes an option that lets you see only general advertisers posts. That changes next month. As of April 15, “your settings will change and the ads you see may start to be based on what you do on TikTok,” the company said in a notice spotted by The edge.

It’s a position that will bring TikTok in line with many other social media apps, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. That said, you will still have the option of blocking it from tracking your activity on other websites and apps and thus using that information to further personalize the advertisements it shows you.

The timing of the notice probably has to do with the next version of iOS 14.5. Apple will soon require that all developers explicitly ask for permission to track your device on websites and apps. This decision forced developers to adapt their advertising policies. LinkedIn, for example, announced last month that it would stop collecting device credentials altogether.
