YouTube is once again the most popular social media platform

YouTube and Facebook are still the most dominant social media platforms in the United States, but Facebook is no longer growing. This is one of the main conclusions of on how Americans use social media from the Pew Research Center.

According to the report, YouTube and Facebook are the most used platforms. But of the two, only YouTube continues to grow, increasing its user share from 73% of adults in 2019 to 81% in 2021. Facebook’s numbers, meanwhile, have stuck. at 69 percent. “Facebook’s growth has stabilized over the past five years, but it remains one of the most used social media sites by adults in the United States,” Pew writes in his report.

Flat growth was also not unique to Facebook. According to Pew, the only other platform to show “statistically significant” growth since 2019 was Reddit, which has gone from 11% in 2019 to 18% in 2021. “This represents a broader trend that extends beyond the past two years when the rapid adoption of most of these sites and apps over the past decade has slowed, ”says Pew.

But while growth has slowed, Americans don’t seem to be any less dependent on social media. Among Facebook users, 49% say they visit the site several times a day. Likewise, 45% of Snapchat users open the app more than once a day, as do 38% of Instagram users. For YouTube, just over a third of users report visiting the service more than once a day.

The report also gives an interesting insight into TikTok’s user base, which was not included in the 2019 research. According to the report, 21% of Americans say they use TikTok. But the numbers are very different for young people, with TikTok’s share rising to 48% among 18-29 year olds. Unsurprisingly, YouTube is also the most dominant platform among this population with 95%, followed by Instagram with 71%, Facebook with 70% and Snapchat with 65%.
